Leather Knowledge Across Generations
Tanbark Leather is a contemporary leather house founded in 2024 by brothers Muhammad Abubakar and Muhammad Umer. We bring natural skins and vegetable-tanned leather into interiors through rugs, engraved calligraphy, artwork and personalised pieces.
Our Foundation
Our material knowledge comes from Karim Tanneries, our family-led vegetable tannery in Gujranwala, Pakistan. The family’s roots in leather reach back to 1960, with factory registration dated 26 December 1968.
Natural vegetable-tanned goat leather is the tannery’s primary material, supported by sheep leather. Mimosa-based tanning, skilled handling and practical knowledge form the foundation of its work. Today, Karim Tanneries exports vegetable-tanned goat and sheep crust leather to Japan.
Floors and Walls
Tanbark’s floor collections include natural hair-on goatskin, sheepskin, deer, reindeer and cowhide rugs. Each material offers its own texture, markings and natural form.
For walls, we engrave calligraphy into hair-on goatskin and smooth vegetable-tanned leather, and use engraving to carry places, architecture, animals and other imagery into leather artwork. Framed Calligraphy presents engraved goatskin within a frame, while Custom Works allows customers to develop a piece around their own wording or design.
The Name Tanbark
“Tan” represents tanning, while “Bark” refers to the plant material used in traditional bark tanning. The name connects our design work to the material knowledge behind it.
Karim Tanneries is our foundation. Tanbark is its design expression.
