Leather Knowledge Across Generations
Tanbark is Karim Tanneries' own leather design brand, founded in 2024 by brothers Muhammad Abubakar and Muhammad Umer. We bring natural hides and vegetable-tanned leather into interiors through rugs, engraved calligraphy, artwork and personalised pieces.
Our Foundation
Our material knowledge comes from Karim Tanneries, our family-led vegetable tannery in Gujranwala, Pakistan. The family's leather trade began before 1960. Tannery production started in 1960, and the factory was registered on 26 December 1968.
Natural vegetable-tanned goat and sheep leather are the tannery's two core materials. Mimosa-based tanning, skilled handling and practical knowledge form the foundation of its work. Today, Karim Tanneries exports vegetable-tanned goat and sheep crust leather to Japan.
Floors and Walls
Our rug collections include hair-on goatskin, sheepskin, deer hide, reindeer hide and cowhide. Each collection offers different textures, markings and dimensions.
Tanbark uses its own laser engraving machines to create calligraphy and imagery on hair-on goatskin and smooth vegetable-tanned leather. Engraved smooth-leather pieces are individually oil-finished afterward in Tanbark's own finishing booth. Framed Calligraphy presents engraved goatskin within a frame, and Custom Works lets a customer develop a piece around their own wording or design, reviewed and confirmed by Tanbark before production.
The Tanbark Display Centre, inside Karim Tanneries in Gujranwala, brings finished pieces together so their scale, surfaces and engraved details can be assessed in person.
The Name Tanbark
"Tan" comes from tanning. "Bark" refers to the tannin-rich bark traditionally used in vegetable tanning.
Karim Tanneries is our foundation. Tanbark is its design expression.
